PSYCHOLOGY AND INDIVIDUAL COUNSELLING

Therapy is most effective when you work with the right psychologist. As such you should see the first session with us as your opportunity to ‘interview’ us for the job of working with you as well as determining the type of therapy you require. We encourage you to browse our practitioner pages to find out a bit more about how each of us works and the areas we have experience and skill in.

To ensure your experience is a good fit, positive and affirming, it is really important to be open and honest in your sessions. A trusting connection with your therapist can make this easier but we do acknowledge that some things are difficult to raise or discuss. This is where email and online communication can be of help.
Between or before sessions you may wish to email your psychologist confidentially to update them or suggest an agenda for the session. If you’d like to ask which therapist may be a good fit for you, please email us and we can point you in the right direction: [email protected]

Please note that email communication is not for crisis support. Should you have a mental health emergency it is important that you contact your local hospital or call 000 for immediate assistance.

CHILD & ADOLESCENT SERVICES

This is an area of specialty in our practice and we pride ourselves in providing a safe and ‘youth friendly’ environment that removes barriers to help seeking in young people. We have strong links with local schools and services and can liaise with your school and/or GP to advocate for and support you. We encourage young people to take charge of their own mental health and wellbeing and so privacy and confidentiality is just as important to us as it is to you. We will clearly explain to you – and parents if necessary – the importance of self refection and awareness in encouraging change in all areas.

As with our adult clients, young people are consulted initially in order to develop a treatment program that is right for them.

PSYCHOMETRIC ASSESSMENTS

If your child or teenager has been experiencing difficulties with learning, engagement, motivation, concentration or their results are inconsistent it may be useful to have a psychometric assessment conducted to look at their cognitive strengths and weaknesses in order to identify the reason/s behind the difficulties. Children of all abilities can benefit from these assessments and they are often requested by schools and teachers in order to help them better understand your child’s learning needs.

The process of an assessment can be different for every child, depending on their needs, however, basic assessments are conducted over two morning sessions, lasting around 2 hours each. Depending on the age of the child there may be a third session to complete some further questionnaires. Assessments should be done on different days to ensure reliability and validity of the tests are maintained. We want to get the best out of your child and the process can be tiring. Results are best in a morning session (as per the recommendations). Additional assessments usually need to be completed by teachers and parents in order to gain a comprehensive picture of each child. No child will be assessed by us simply because the parent is curious about their IQ. There needs to be sufficient reason to administer the assessment and we prefer to work with schools in advising and recommending strategies and programs to assist with teaching and learning after the assessment, regardless of the area of need be it enrichment or learning support.

Fees are calculated according to each child’s needs. They will be discussed with you before the assessment is carried out. There are no ‘extra’ charges for reports or liaising with schools, we see this as a fundamental part of the process in supporting you and your child through the process.

We will provide you with the opportunity to talk your child through the assessment results in a way that makes them proud of the strengths they have and aware of what they are challenged by. This is our point of difference to many centres who do not involve the child after the assessment session itself. We do NOT share scores or percentiles with children. The assessment must be a positive and affirming process for them and leave them feeling empowered with a better understanding of their strengths and areas of challenge.

Please email if you have specific questions regarding assessments and costs.
